Access Technology Van

Bringing Technology to People

Mobile Access Technology (MAT) Lab

The need for the Access Technology Van arose when some of the clients of TransAccess had difficulty getting to the downtown San Jose site. The Access Technology Van is designed to have all of the features of the on-site Access Technology Center at TransAccess, but housed in a van, including over 75 hardware and software devices and programs. This allows the evaluator to go to the client's computer workstation and appropriately complete the evaluation.

Equipment is brought to clients at their work, home or school, which they can try out to determine if it works well for them. At the same time, the evaluator can determine if the access software and hardware are compatible with client's current system. Training for specialized software and equipment, including voice recognition, is offered as well.

The Access Technology Van was also designed to provide services to demonstrate access technology to employers, educators and individuals with disabilities.

Finding Solutions

Just as with the Access Technology Center, clients are assessed by an occupational therapist. Evaluations are joint ventures where the client explores possibilities supplied by the evaluator. The OT and client together decide on potential access solutions.

Funding the Access Technology Van

The Access Technology Van was financed through an Establishment Grant with the California State Department of Rehabilitation and the TransAccess endowment fund. The Mobile Lab Coordinator provides computer access evaluations and trainings for the same clients as the Access Technology Center, including Department of Rehabilitation clients and employees utilizing Worker's Compensation Insurance. The Access Technology Van serves clients in many Bay Area counties, including Monterey, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo.

Fee for Services

Similar to the Access Technology Center, fees for the Access Technology Van services, including evaluation and training sessions, may be paid for by the California State Department of Rehabilitation , Worker's Compensation Insurance carriers, or private pay on a sliding scale. TransAccess also has a limited number of scholarships available for people with disabilities who do not qualify for other funding sources.
