2003 MISSION FULFILLMENT REPORT January 1, 2003 – December 31, 2003 In 2003 TransAccess provided direct services to 1,205 people with disabilities, and indirect services to over 1,100 persons with disabilities. TransAccess also provided information and referral services to over 500 individuals, which includes employers, service providers, teachers, caregivers, family members and students. View Office, and presented at employment Access 2003, Disability Etiquette for Department of Rehabilitation and Community Service Providers, County Office of Education Transition Fair, Industry Liaison Group, East San Jose Unified School District Special Education Teachers, Yerba Buena High School Special Education Teachers, NOVA Youth Office and Business Leadership Network. Projects Staff provided disability etiquette and access technology training to the NOVA CONNECT one stop partners. The TransAccess School-to-Career Program was the local organizer of the National Disability Mentoring Day of the American Association of Persons with Disabilities (AAPD). Employees of various companies participated in National Disability Mentoring Day as volunteers to work with the students at their company sites. Staff organized a job fair for the Fremont Unified Special Education students. Employer Involvement Staff arranged STC, Internship and Placement activities with the following employers: Adobe, Agilent, AMC Theaters, Bank of America, Century Theaters (Great Mall, Capitol 16 and Oakridge)Childcare Careers, Chuck E. Cheese, Coast Guard, Costco, FedEx, General Dynamics, IBM, Lockheed, National Semiconductor, Paramount’s Great America, Raging Waters, San Jose Airport, Santa Clara County, Santa Clara County Office of Education, Santa Clara Valley Water District, SAP, Shoreline, SRI, Starbuck’s, UPS, US Caden, Victoria’s Secret, Wyndmere, YMCA. BAC The TransAccess STC/Internship Advisory Committee met bi-monthly at TransAccess. The TransAccess student/teacher recognition event was held in conjunction with the Fall BAC meetings. Ten students, a teacher, and employer (Century Theaters) were recognized for their outstanding performance. Meetings Staff attended the Community Collaboration Team Meeting, the Mission College Advisory Committee, the CONNECT Stakeholders meeting, Fremont Union ROP, Occupational Training Institute, HP Volunteer Fair, West Valley College Advisory Committee, SVILC, BACED (Bay Area Committee for the Employment of Persons with Disabilities), the Department of Rehabilitation Annual Employment Symposium, Muy Bueno, CHiSPA, and the San Jose One-Stop Center. I am satisfied with the level of service provided to me. * TransAccess is a great organization to work with. I have had personal and professional contact with them and I have not found a similar agency that I like as well as TransAccess. * TransAccess staff was professional, knowledgeable in their training and I have benefited a lot. * I was very grateful with the service I received on my appointment day. Highlights Presentations Staff presented at San Jose Medical Center, Oracle Health Fair, Project HIRED, Genentech, Dynavox, Workability, Human Scale, Youth Leadership forum, Young Life, Santa Clara University, American High School, Center for Employment Training (CET), Children’s Health Council, Department of Rehabilitation, Mission High School, Lion’s Club and the SCI/Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Support Group, Department of Rehabilitation Symposium, Department of Rehabilitation Access technology Fair at Evergreen College, Freedom Scientific, Salinas ROP, DOR Conference, DOR AT Fair at Evergreen College, Santa Clara University LD teacher trainees. Department of Rehabilitation presentations at the San Rafael Office, Piedmont Hills DR Unit Meeting, Capitola DR Unit Meeting, San Jose District Office. Conference Presentations Staff presented at Tech Connections Audio Conference, California State University at Northridge Accessible Technology Conference (CSUN), Marin AT Forum, and employmentAccess 2003 General Business Meetings Staff met with the MS Society, the ProVAR team at the Veteran’s Administration, Access Ingenuity, Cisco, Ergonomic Sciences, Department of Rehabilitation, Fremont Union High School District, CAT Lab in Berkeley, Evergreen Community College Advisory Committee, IBM Web Tool presentation, Mission College Advisory Committee Meeting, ICT regarding on-line teacher training and FileMaker regarding product accessibility. Other Services Staff provided training to 84 teachers in the Eastside Union High School District and at Monta Vista high school of Fremont Union High School District. Fremont Union High School District included TransAccess in their Tech Prep Grant for teacher training and support for access technology. Staff presented on access technology to instructors at Foothill/De Anza Community College District. Staff continues to provide consulting services to small and large employers to accommodate their employees with disabilities, assist in return to work programs and consult on accessibility of products or services. Staff trained and presented the Hewlett-Packard accessible library workstations at libraries at the University of South Dakota, the Cleveland Public Library, the Johnson County (Kansas) Public Library, Arizona State University Library, and the San Diego Public Library. General Fundraising Total were $39,791, TransAccess received $32,512 in cash donations. Grants Submitted and Funded The Health Trust ($20,000), The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation ($10,000), and The Beaumont Foundation ($22,500). New Projects The program description and cost statement submitted to DR to provide Vocational Assessment Services was approved by Sacramento. We have started to market the service to DR and will be providing services in February. Staff met with ICT to partner in the creation of web based training of access technology for special education teachers. Memberships TransAccess continues to attend and participate at a leadership level the Professional Technical Diversity Network, Silicon Valley Partnership, the Governor’s Committee for the Employment of Persons with Disabilities, the Santa Clara County Committee for Persons with Disabilities, and the Community Collaboration Team, San Jose Leadership. Administrative TransAccess is in the process of creating a database for programs and services. Events and PR Event employmentAccess 2003 was held August 19, 20 and 21 at the Microsoft Conference Center. Maria requested the center and amenities such as AV and refreshments to be donated again this year and the request was granted. Siemens, State Compensation Insurance Fund, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Sun Microsystems, and Lockheed-Martin were sponsors. The conference was successful and had over 350 attendees. employmentAccess 2004 will be on September 29th and 30th at the Microsoft Conference Center. Media Staff presented at the Silicon Valley Radio and TV Public Affairs Directors meeting. The Business Journal interviewed Staff for an article on access technology. The article and photos ran in the January 2, 2004 Business Journal edition. The Campbell Press and Los Gatos Times published an article on TransAccess’ services. On-the-Move and Mt. View Public Television have produced a T.V. show which highlights the employment Access Conference.
